Green Tomatoes

With the cusp of autumn near, and ever so slightly cooler temps, this past Sunday my family and I decided to go for a drive in the country.

We drove up to the town of Juliette about twenty five miles from our home. Gorgeous rolling hills, farm land, cool breezes, and wide open spaces greeted us along the way.

Now, I am sure that not many of you have even heard of the town of Juliette, Georgia have you? Neither had I until I moved here.

Juliette was the tiny town in which the actual filming of the 1991 Oscar Nominated and Golden Glove nominated film, “Fried Green Tomatoes” took place. The movie was based on the Pulitzer Prize nominated 1987 novel “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café” by author, Fannie Flagg. The actual Whistle Stop Café was located in Alabama, however.

The town ~ just a minute long ~ still looks as though it is a movie set. It does not look like much has changed since the era depicted in the story.

Rustic shacks of buildings, memorabilia from the movie being sold to tourists, The Whistle Stop Café serving up grits and fried green tomatoes, and other treasures ~ you feel as though you are transported back into time.

The cutest things I found were these hand painted folk art bird houses made from gourds. We passed these along the road into Juliette and I just had to stop and take a closer look.

Each is hand painted by this quirky country woman ~ and not one is the same ~ all so darling. Bless her heart, she should sell them on Etsy! And I should have purchased one to hang in my kitchen or our sun room. How cute would that be? They are too precious to be hung outside. Maybe I’ll go back.

It was a fun day and the next day was the first day of Kindergarten for our little guy.

Have a great week. Next Tuesday, September 1st I will let you all know who the lucky winner is for my give away.

Ciao amici,
Suzanne
